Maarten de Vries began his career with Philips in 1986 as Controller of the Dutch Sales Organization for Consumer Lighting in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. From 1987 onwards he held various Controller positions in the Netherlands and moved from 1992 - 2002 to the Asia Pacific region. Between 1996 - 2002 he acted as CFO for Philips Consumer Electronics' Monitors Business Unit in Chung-li, Taiwan. He became CFO for the DAP division in 2002, but returned to the Consumer Electronics division in 2003 also as CFO. He holds a master degree in Business Economics from the University of Groningen, as well as a post-graduate degree in Controllership from the Vrije Universiteit of Amsterdam.
